Drone pilots are used to checking airports, stadiums, national parks, and temporary flight restrictions before launching.

But the next wave of restricted airspace may come from a different direction: critical infrastructure.

The FAA has proposed a new process that would allow certain fixed-site critical infrastructure operators to request unmanned aircraft flight restrictions around their facilities. The proposed rule would create a pathway for eligible sites to ask the FAA for restrictions based on aviation safety, protection of people and property, national security, or homeland security concerns.

The comment period was originally scheduled to close July 6, 2026, but the FAA extended it to August 5, 2026, giving drone operators, infrastructure owners, agencies, and industry groups more time to weigh in.

For pilots, this is not just another regulatory update. It is a preview of where drone access may become more complicated.
